- Please use only black or blue ink to sign the petition.
- You must read the petition object statement that is written in bold print at the top of each petition to each person who signs your petition sheet. This statement cannot be pre-recorded. If someone says they don’t need you to read it, simply let them know that you are legally required to read it to them.
- Each petition sheet can only be assigned to a single signature collector, and that person cannot allow their petition sheet to be signed when they are not present. The signature collector must witness each signature on their petition sheet. That person will legally affirm that they witnessed each signature on their sheet prior to returning the completed petition sheet to the campaign; more information on that step is below.
- Each petition sheet can only have signers from a single county. It is best to wait to fill in the county blank until you get your first signature on the petition sheet. Write the name of the county in the two blank lines at the top of each petition sheet. Before a person signs, always ask which county they live in and provide the correct county petition sheet. For example, if “Lancaster County” is written at the top of the petition sheet, then only signers from Lancaster County can sign that sheet. Then, any other voters from that county can then sign that petition sheet. If someone signs the wrong county petition, simply cross through their name and have them sign a petition sheet with the correct county.
- Only signatures from registered Nebraska voters will count. Please ask a signer what county they are registered to vote in. If a signer is not registered to vote, please ask them to register as soon as possible. An individual can easily register to vote online here: www.nebraska.gov/apps-sos-voter-registration/. They are allowed to sign the petition and then go home and register, however, if they are not registered to vote before the petitions are turned in their signature will be invalid.
- Individuals may only sign for themselves (they cannot sign on behalf of a family member).
- A signature collector may not sign their own petition sheet. Please find another volunteer and sign their petition.
- When you are finished with a petition page (it is filled or you will not be gathering more signatures on it) it needs to be notarized. Most banks and courthouses will notarize documents at no cost to you. You will need a photo ID. Please wait to fill out the bottom part of the petition sheet until you are directed by the notary to do so. This must be done with every petition page before it is turned back into the campaign. You do not need to have a page filled to have it notarized, but once it is you cannot gather any more signatures on it. If you need help finding a notary, let us know.
- Return the signed and notarized petitions. If you need more petitions, please contact us.
